Old City-Baku

During the tour, your first stop will be the Alley of Honor, where you will see memorials of artists, singers and composers, including singer Muslim Magomayev, who was known for his vocal talent and charisma in the Soviet period.

The next stop will be the Uphill Park, which is the highest point in the capital of Azerbaijan, offering a panoramic view of the entire central part of the city and Baku Bay. This is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in Baku, which makes it suitable for quiet walks.

Your professional guide will take you to a specific place in the park, where you will have the opportunity to see a unique view of the city with its beautiful buildings and landmarks, as well as the Ferris Wheel, Crystal Hall and Baku Boulevard. In addition, you will have a view of buildings such as the Parliament of Azerbaijan and the Flaming Towers, which are three skyscrapers that include a hotel, apartments and offices.

The next stop will be the Baku Boulevard, the waterfront park, which is considered one of the main attractions and pride of Baku. This is a magnificent 25-kilometer park with exotic trees, shopping and entertainment centers, bicycle paths, views of the European architecture of Baku in the 19th century. In addition, the park is famous for a small version of Venice. It fascinates visitors of the city and residents of Baku with its canals, bridges and gondolas.

Walking through this amazing park, you will immediately recognize one of the architectural masterpieces of the Stalin era - the Government House of Soviet Azerbaijan. It took almost 16 years to build this gigantic structure when Azerbaijan was under Soviet rule. Moreover, historical evidence shows that German prisoners of war were used to build this huge structure.

Baku city tour will end with visiting the park in front of the Heydar Aliyev Center, which is considered to be a masterpiece of modern architecture in the style of deconstruction from the “queen of curved lines” Zaha Hadid. On its territory there is a magnificent park with green lawns and snow-white footpaths, which pass alongside original sculptures and compositions, the most famous of which is a favorite of the guests of the city I LOVE BAKU.

After completing the first half of the tour, you will have lunch in the picturesque Old Garden restaurant in the Old Town, which includes the national dish "Saj", Old Garden salad, soft drinks and tea with sweets.

The second part of the tour starts from the site in front of the entrance to the Maiden Tower, which is a symbol of the city of Baku and is included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. According to the history and purpose of this tower, there are several scientific versions and an infinite number of legends that your professional guide will tell you in more detail.

Opposite the Maiden's Tower are the ruins of the “Church of Saint Bartholomew,” who, as you know, was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ and was engaged in the spread of Christianity in Albania and in Asia. In 71 he was crucified by fire worshipers. It was at the place of his death that this church was later built.

The largest and oldest extant bath in the Old City is the Haji Haji Bahama. Until 1960, nobody knew about it, since it was covered with earth. On the surface there were numerous shacks and houses, whose inhabitants for hundreds of years had no idea that an ancient monument was buried under their feet.

Caravanserai Multani was created in the XIV century. Caravanserai Multani was built for Indian merchants - fire worshipers who came from the city of Multan in India. Opposite Multani is the Bukhara Caravanserai, which was built at the end of the 15th century on the trade route that passes through the Shamakhi Gate. Basically, merchants and travelers from Central Asia stayed in it, in particular from Bukhara, from where it got its name. The narrow street between these two caravansaries was part of the Great Silk Way.

The first house belonged to the sailor. That is why the building resembles the deck of a ship. Now there is a carpet shop. The “house with chains” before the Soviet power belonged to the local merchant Haji Mamed Huseyn. Recently, this building was the office of oil companies such as BP and Statoil. Currently it is the building of the Museum of Archeology.

The house of the Baku Khans dates back to the 18th century. From 1747 to 1806, the rulers of the Baku Khanate lived here, the last of which was Huseyngulu Khan.

The city customs was located at the Double Gates. In the ancient city, even then, hygiene standards were carefully controlled. Every person who entered the city was forced to wash himself. And the feet of animals were smeared with a special antiseptic made of oil - tar.

Nowadays, the length of the fortress walls is 500 meters, whereas earlier it reached one and a half kilometers. Currently, these fortified walls unite 25 semicircles and have 5 gates. It was behind these walls was the entire city of Baku until the 19th century. These walls were witnesses to the cannon attacks of Peter’s troops, the Safavids and the Mogol-Tatar troops.

The quadrangular tower (donjon) of the city walls was built in the 15th century. According to medieval sources, there were 70 half-towers in Baku and one quadrangular tower located in the northern part of the fortress walls. In the Middle Ages, this tower was used as a reinforcement of the defensive ability of the fortress walls from the north, and also as a storage room for weapons.

One of the most important architectural masterpieces of the Old City is the Palace of Shirvanshahs, which is also called the pearl of Baku. 

Then your guide will take you to the bust of Aliaga Vahid, the famous Azerbaijani poet, who was a close friend of the great Russian poet Sergey Yesenin. Sculptures in his hair are elegantly created scenes from his works, reflecting the life of society.

Part of the famous Azerbaijani and Soviet films were shot in the old town. Among them are the “Diamond Hand”, “Amphibian Man”, “Aibolit-66”, “Tehran-43”, “Do not be afraid, I'm with you”, “A Day has passed”, etc. Your guide will take you to where Nikulin fell and broke his arm and shouted loudly - "Damn it!"

The final sight in this tour will be the Juma Mosque, located in the vicinity of the Maiden's Tower. During its existence, the mosque was repeatedly and radically updated and rebuilt. In 1437, during the reign of Shirvanshah Khalil-ullah I from the Derbendi dynasty, a minaret was built near the mosque, which has survived to our days.
