Azerbaijan Republic is located on the chains of the Northern and Southern Caucasus Mountains, on the western coast of the Caspian Sea. A small country with an area of just under 90,000 sq. km. nevertheless, it is transcontinental, since it is located on the border between Europe and Asia. It runs along the North Caucasian Ridge and logically ends in the Caspian Sea through the Absheron Peninsula.
The entire Caspian Sea zone is one of the lowest in the world in relation to the level of the world ocean – 37 meters. The highest point of Azerbaijan is the peak of Bazarduzu (4466 n. o. m.), one of the peaks of the Greater Caucasus. The most geo-physically ancient point of the country is Gudialchay gorge (Minare), also belonging to the chain of North Caucasus.
The country borders with Iran, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia and Russia on land. In addition to the land border, Russian Federation and Iran also have a sea border with Azerbaijan. And in addition, Caspian sea also separates Azerbaijan from Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
The republic has an exclave – the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. It has a common border with Turkey and is separated from the main part of the country by territory of Armenia.
The largest settlements of Azerbaijan are in Baku (the capital), Ganja, Sumgait, Khirdalan, Mingechevir, Lankaran and Nakhichevan.
The country is divided into 66 administrative regions (districts).
